Hello September!
We made it, friends. Another Summer Reading Season in the books. There are about nine business days of rest, and then it's Fundraising Season!
The fourth annual Taste of Lower Providence is just a month away. I'm working the event, but it doesn't feel like work at all. It feels like a giant party for the library! I hope to see you there; keep an eye on our website for more information!
Ahhh, September...At the beginning of the year, I wrote a post about new adult programs. Well, here we are nine months later, and some programs are a hit, some were a flop, and now I have more programs to try! Library programming is like trying on new running shoes: You just don't know what will work until you try them out!
- We're tweaking the Classic Movie to be a Movie Appreciation Society. Our very own Kevin will lead the group in a small, casual discussion after the movie. September's movie is Paths of Glory. This group meets the First Friday of the month.
- We're adding an evening crafting group! The Evening Creatives is a place to come after work hours to unwind, socialize, and make some progress on those craft projects! This group will meet on the second Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 pm.
- The BYOBook Club was a flop, but in its place, we are going to try a teen program! The Teen Movie Hang will play PG-13 movies and have retro games out to play and socialize. Kevin will facilitate this group as well. This is technically a children's program, but Kevin, Sandy (our Head of Children's Services), and I are putting our heads together to bring more programs for this age group! This group will meet the fourth Saturday of the month.
Besides being the best Earth, Wind, and Fire song, September is one of my favorite months. I love saying goodbye to summer and hello to cooler days, spiced everything, and birthday season for my family. I also can't wait to go back to enjoying the outdoors: August was too humid and too buggy! While I haven't been outside myself, I have been reading about the great outdoors!
I love a non-fiction Graphic Novel. (They make them for adults too!!) I read The Vanishing of Lake Peigneur by Allan Wolf. It's about a lake in Louisiana that was next to oil drilling and salt mining. One day in 1980, an oil drilling accident caused the entire lake to empty into the salt mine! The lake completely disappeared, took an island with it, and thankfully no one was killed! I had no idea this strange historic event ever took place. This book was gripping; I couldn't put it down. Picturing a lake swirling around like water in a bathtub is wild, and people lived to tell the tale!
I'm on a real body of water/shipwreck/natural disaster kick in my reading choices right now. Last month I read a book about the Edmund Fitzgerald. This month, I'm reading A Marriage At Sea by Sophie Elmhirst. It's about a British couple who build a boat and dream of sailing across the world, except they get shipwrecked and have to live on the ocean in a dinghy. I'm not finished yet, but this may be my favorite book of the year. It's quirky, heartfelt, and completely unbelievable!
